By the time you read this, I expect that you will know the results of the election. At the time of my writing this, however, I do not. Nevertheless, I am fairly confident of one thing. That no matter the results of the election, there is likely to be some turbulence in this country. In the storms that we are now in, I know of only one way to maintain calm within it and that is to go to the one who actually has calmed a literal storm: Jesus. This miracle of Jesus was intended to teach us something. It was intended to teach us that no matter how much tumult surrounds us exteriorly, Jesus can always give us interior peace. This is what struck me yesterday when meditating on the third Joyful Mystery – the birth of Jesus. Jesus was born in the midst of civil unrest. The emperor had decreed an empire-wide census resulting in Mary and Joseph needing to walk many miles to Bethlehem to be counted. This resulted in such a commotion that Mary couldn’t even find a place to give birth. Even government persecution finds its way into this story - King Herod tried to kill the newborn Jesus. Yet even in the midst of this chaos, God gave us – I would argue – the greatest image of peace that we’ve ever known: the Prince of Peace lying in the manger among the sheep and the oxen and the angels announcing with joy to the shepherds “peace to people of good will.” It is this scene that brings peace to my heart when I feel distraught at the storm. Whatever turbulence we find ourselves in, there is one and only one who can give us peace – a peace that the world cannot give – and that is Jesus. Let’s not forget that.
